“The only normal people are the ones you don't know very well.” ~Joe Ancis Quotes

Living with a narcissist for years, I observed one extremely unattractive, yet very predominant, trait that they all possess: narcissists do not give themselves the right to be ‘wrong’. A narcissist can actually go into a rage at the merest innuendo that their actions are ‘wrong’. That’s because they don’t understand the very elementary difference between their ‘behavior’ and their ‘self’, or rather, who they are. If you tell a narcissist that what they did was wrong, they will hear, instead, that who they are is wrong.

True, sometimes our human pride makes it hard for us to admit when we are wrong. For many of us we deny ourselves the basic right to be wrong. We place unrealistic expectations and boundaries on ourselves in our endless quest for perfection. When we do make a mistake, an error, or a misjudgment, we don’t understand that it is not ‘us’ that is wrong, but rather our actions and/or our reactions that may be considered improper or inappropriate. However, acting or reacting in a way that is not perfect does not make who we are unacceptable, or a bad person, it just makes our behavior not readily acceptable.

~~ Today I will give myself the human right to be wrong. I will look at my actions, instinctive reactions, and my behaviors as sometimes being unacceptable and I will make the conscious effort to correct them. By admitting that my actions may sometimes have been wrong I am not saying that who I am is wrong. Today I will realize that perfection is an impossible state, and I will stop expecting myself to live in a perfect way.

Today I will take direct responsibility for any of my actions which may have hurt someone else, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and I will make the conscious effort to act willfully -- and not ‘react’ emotionally -- in the future. Today I will try to control my actions by not allowing my emotional state to have free reign over me or my behavior.

Just for today I will think before I act out, and find the grace to forgive myself and the grace to forgive others, as well. Just for today I will acknowledge that I -- just like everybody else -- has the basic, human RIGHT to be ‘wrong’. ~~

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover the prisoner was YOU.”  ~Unknown

“Sometimes we strive so hard for perfection that we forget that imperfection is happiness.”  ~Karen Nave

“It is only imperfection that complains of what is imperfect. The more perfect we are the more gentle and quiet we become towards the defects of others.”  ~Joseph Addison
