What to Do After A Breakup

So you’ve just experienced a breakup. The love of your life has upped and walked out of your door and into the arms of another person. They are never going to return, and all you’re left with are the memories of your time together and that piercing, cold feeling around your heart that makes you want to crawl into bed and just let everything float away.

If you’ve ever been on the losing end of a breakup, you would know how hard it is to move on with your life and get over all those negative feelings that were left behind when your ex walked out on you. With all those people hovering around you offering their sympathy, sometimes you just want to scream at all of them to go away. No matter their good intentions, sometimes all that attention is just suffocating, and only serves to remind you of your loss. This is time to learn what to do after a breakup, without thirty different people all giving you well-meaning -- but wrong -- advice!

The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that it’s normal to want to be alone and away from other people every now and again after a failed relationship. After all, being with other people, especially if you have common friends, serves as either a reminder of the good times, or as a way to nudge you back into reality when you’re not ready yet. It’s alright to want to take a time out for yourself to help you get back on your feet.

Secondly, when it comes to what to do after a breakup it always helps to find out what really happened to cause your relationship to sputter out. Sure, it might be hurtful, but you should always try to find closure after a breakup so that you don’t have questions afterwards. It’s harder to find the answer to those questions once everyone has moved on, rather than find them out now and start the healing process as early as you can.

Third, find activities or hobbies that you enjoy. No matter how compatible a couple is, there are bound to be activities or hobbies that you’ve neglected since you hooked up with your ex, simply because your ex did not find the same pleasure in the aforementioned hobby as you did. By going back and rediscovering that pleasure, you will start to reclaim a little bit of yourself, and again help the healing process along. It also helps by giving you a distraction from your negative thoughts and feelings.

Lastly, don’t bottle your feelings in. After a breakup, there will be negative emotions and thoughts brewing inside you and you need to let those out before they fester and become toxic. The best way to do so is to find a safe place to just vent and rant.

Depending on your preference, you can either do this with friends or go at it alone; just remember not to do anything that you will regret once the storm has passed.
Recovering after a breakup is hard, but never as hard as you think it would be. The key to what to do after a break up is to just keep on moving up and forward, since that’s the only direction that you should ever really go in!
